Being the most storied franchise in adult hockey history gets you a few interesting calls now and again. The Bombers got just such a call on Wednesday when a team from the Aspen Adult Ice Hockey League (AIAHL) was unable to play in a scheduled contest that evening in Flemington. The tickets were already sold, the officials were en route and the opposing team was ready to play. But with no opponent-what was the Aspen Ice Adult Hockey League to do? Call the Bombers-its worth a shot!
So with a mere 6 hours before the scheduled game was to commence the Bombers rallied up the troops and got a skeleten crew roster ready for the game. Mostly Bombers with hopefully a guest or two. "Junior and I got there first." said Bill Auld, adding "He asked me who was going to make it to the game. I said you, me, Josh, JZ, Eric, Dave, and , oh yea, that guy from the Shamrocks who ripped the facemask off my helmet last season!"
A few local Aspen players joined in to help the Bombers lose 4-1 to a highly skilled but somewhat odd bunch of youngin's known as Team Red Devil. The Bombers put on a good show for the fan's-so much so that the Bomber GM was pressed by Aspen management to bring the team to Aspen next season. "I don't think that will work out logistically for us for a full season-but call us whenever you need us to save the day again." said the GM.
Oh, yeah-and the only Bomber goal of the night was scored by Bill Auld on a sweet assist from none other than "the guy who ripped the facemask of his head" Jimmy Chester.
