Senior Injury May Not Be Season Ending

I recently had a chance to speak with injured Bomber Mike Gilbert, Sr and his demeanor was much more positive after meeting with doctors than it was the night of the incident.

Senior said "The doctor drained the fluid from my knee and now I can move it a little. There does not appear to be any ligamant damage at this time. He's going to look at it Nov 05 and we'll see what the next step will be. He mentioned a MRI but if I don't show any more symptoms we'll just let it heal and take it from there.
Good news for the knee!"

And bad news for opposing team's forwards!!

Bombers Win But at What Price?

The Bombers won convincingly Monday 6-1 vs the Smoke. That was the good news. The bad news for the storied franchise was the win may have cost them one of their leaders for a good deal of time. "I disloated my patella. Done it before and I know its that." said Bomber defensive legend Mike Gilbert, Sr after a fluke collision with a Smoke forward left him sprawled out on the defensive zone ice.

Bomber management took a "wait and see" appoach to the injury but they do fear it will cost the team one of their top defensemen for a considerable amount of time. This is not the first time-he has the scars to prove it. But he sets his goals and keeps coming back. We need him so we are happy that's the way he is approaching also approching this."

The injury was unfortunate not only because of its outcome but how it happened. "The Smoke player stepped on the puck and fell as if he stepped on a banana peel-almost launching his body right into Mike." said Bomber forward Bill Auld who was trailing the play.

So coupled with the temporary reassignments of Neil "Slava" Vanderchuk and Jeffrey "Sha-na-na" Bowser, the injury to Senior will force the Bomber GM to make some calls to shore up the lineup. "We have a few star players that may be able to make their returns soon, namely the 2nd all time modern era goal scorer, Mark Bochner and fan favorite Gary Simpson-member of the Time Line- the greatest scoring line in Bomber history."

The players left on the ice took it upon themselves to win the game for fallen comrade and were led by a hat trick from Mike Rosenberg who also tapped in two assists. Jean Eric Hoyer' netted two of his own to extend his goal scoring streak to 7 games-scoring 15 goals in that span. The defense rebounded from the loss of Sr and saw John Zimnoch and Brian Kostrowski logging many, many minutes of ice time. Mike Gilbert Jr picked up his game and his dad's equipment notching a goal and 2 assists.

Next up for the Bombers- a late night game vs the Predators on Monday November 1.

The Bomber Hockey Club and the NJ Devil Alumni are going back to where it all began, bringing their highly successful "Charity Hockey Classic" to Mennen Arena in Morristown, NJ on Sunday, April 3rd at 1pm. The game will be the sixth installment between the two clubs. The previous five games have raised over $40,000 for local charities.

This year's event beneficiary will be The Joseph Lapinski Foundation. www.lapinskifoundation.org The JLF is a charity assistance program headed by Bomber Bill Auld. Auld commented, "Our goal is to raise monies that we can then donate to other worthwhile charities in our member communities. The JLF focuses on supporting causes in three major areas: Personal and Public Health, Family and Societal Relations and the Environment. With this event we will organize our efforts to help fund the important work of pancreatic cancer research."

Former NJ Devil captain Bruce Driver has worked tirelessly to put together these and other charity games as head of the NJ Devil Alumni Association. He has managed to bring the fans former Devil greats such as Ken Daneyko, Coach Larry Robinson and fan favorite Glen "Chico" Resch to prior "Charity Hockey Classic" games. "I will try to convince Chico to play goal again." noted Driver who acknowledges that his appearances are special because he doesn't do many. Bomber forward Rober' Auld remembers one of those such games "I won't forget that 2009 game, Chico was there, the Stanley Cup too- helping us raise money for Habitat for Humanity. It was great!"

Bomber Executive Director of Hockey Operations, Mike Rosenberg promised a new and exciting outlook for the 2011 game. "This will be our sixth Charity Classic and we are focused on pulling together the efforts of the entire organization to make this the most successful event to date." So be prepared for a new take on the now storied rivalry between your Bombers and the NJ Devil Alumni.

So get ready! Get excited! And get your game on!

New Winger in Bomber Future?

Mike Rosenberg went on a scouting trip in late September and found a player that most other adult league teams somehow missed in their search for talent. "Zach Parise is a great player that knows how to go to the net and score goals. He would be a great asset to our team."

Contract talks are difficult and rumour has it that Mr. Parise does now have some other options. It may come down to money but Bomber management will do everything it can to sign the skilled foward.

Whale of a Game

Well in came the Whalers. The much touted former B2 squad that many said could give the Bombers issues and potentially reassign the storied franchise to non league leader status. This game would be a test for the Bombers, one they were eager to take on.

And the team responded jumping out to a 4-0 lead at the conclusion of 2 periods of play. It seemed somewhat unexpected after the games initial buildup. The Bombers were really not in trouble the first two periods. The Whalers looked like a team that knew their ice well but the Bombers just looked better. But the third period showed the Whalers were not some B2 has been squad. They were better than that and rallied to tie the score at 4 forcing the second shootout for the Bombers in the last three games.

Showing the moxy of a team that has not yet lost a game this season, the Bombers entered the shootout with confidence-scoring on their first two attemps by Eric Hoyer and Mike Rosenberg. Josh Burke didn't allow the Whale to get a sniff of the net stopping both attempts to beat him giving the Bombers their 5th victory to start the season.

Hoyer Adds 4 more

Bomber Hockey standout "Jean" Eric Hoyer' had 11 goals last season-tieing for the team lead in that category. After 4 games this season Hoyer' already has 10 goals-looking unstoppable with two 4 goal games. "I don't know but I have to think that is a Bomber record for a four game span. I would say he is seeing the back of the net real well!!." noted the Bomber GM. (note: the feat has actually been done-twice berfore-Mike Rosenberg tallied 10g in 4 and 12 in 6 at Twin Oaks in the Winter 04-05 season and Jimmy Lawson did it at Twin Oaks in the Fall 07 season. Tony D'anna set the high playoff mark with 6 goals in 3 games in the BSA Spring 09 championship season)

Hoyer's latest 4 goal outburst came at the hands of the Vudoo and helped the Bombers to a 8-5 victory. Brian Kostrowski added 2 of his own from the blueline and Mike Rosenberg and Rober' Auld finished out the Bomber scoring. The win keeps the Bombers undefeated and in first place.

Next game is Sunday October 17th at 9:35 vs the Whalers. Get your tickets now and ensure you are there to watch what the Hoyer' Express will do next.

Bomber "Sixies" Beat Spartans in Shootout

presented by contributing writer Mike Gilbert,Jr.

In a rematch of their last playoff game, the Bombers took the ice against the Spartans. Already behind the 8-ball with a severely depleted 6 skater roster, the Bombers, led by stalwart in goal Josh Burke, battled the Spartans in their usual manner, with both sides playing to a scoreless tie at the end of the first period. Led by Mike Gilbert Sr., the defensive pair of he and Brian Kostrowski blocked shots and battled away with the pesky Spartan players.

Less than 3 minutes into the second period, Superstar John Zimnoch, playing forward for the depleted Bomber squad, took a feed from Mike Gilbert Jr. to give the visiting Bombers the lead. 1:17 later, off another feed from Jr., French Canadian Import, Jean Eric Hoyer tallied the Bombers' second goal, staking them to a 2-0 lead. Both goals were also assisted upon by Dave Bochner. The Bombers continued to play their shutdown defensive system and frustrated the Spartans until 1:48 remained in the second period. On a controversial play, so controversial that the scorekeeper was unable to provide a jersey number for the Spartan scorer, the Spartan's benefited from a screened referee, who despite never seeing the puck actually cross the goal line, awarded them their first goal much to the dismay of Bomber goalie Josh Burke. Perhaps it was the clear kicking motion displayed by the Spartan player, or the out of position official, or maybe even the puck never crossing the goal line, but the Bomber keeper was so incensed by the call, that he derided the referee and his zebra pattern thong to the tune of a 2 minute unsportsmanlike penalty. Served by Mike Gilbert Sr., the Bombers shut down the Spartans, finishing the period with a 2-1 Bomber lead. After the game, Jean Eric Hoyer recounted the play that got under Burke's skin. "I had one of their (Spartan) players actually approach me to say the puck was kicked by their guy, and that it had never gone in".

The third period featured two clearly tired teams, as the undermanned Bomber squad took on a Spartan team featuring three more skaters than the Bombers. On a play personifying their spent skating legs, the Bombers allowed a partial breakaway to the Spartans' Mike Vagisilian, who fired a shot that grazed Burke's skate and went in. Still clearly incensed by the missed call by the thong clad referee, Burke refocused himself and shut down the remaining Spartan attack, to the tune of 21 saves for the game. Despite a strong Bomber attack, featuring Jean Eric Hoyer, Dave Bochner, John Zimnoch and Mike Gilbert, Jr., the game ended at 2-2.

To the shootout they went - the home team Spartans elected to shoot first against Josh Burkibulin aka The Burklin Wall. The first Spartan shooter met Burke's glove hand, as the keeper deflected the puck away. The Bombers first shooter, Hoyer, displayed the talent that garnered him his recent lucrative contract with a hard shot that beat the Spartan goalie high to his glove side. Hoyer, with a Zorro-esque sword motion after the goal, commented on the bench that, "I made a conscious effort to just shoot the puck, no dekeing" The Bombers could not have been happier with that decision. Hoyer's goal turned out to be the only shootout goal that they needed, as Burke stonewalled the last two Spartan shooters. The Bombers, now 3-0 on the young season, will look to continue their hard word in their next game versus the Voodoo on Sunday, 10/10.

Game Notes:
- Bomber regulars, Bill Auld, Rober' Auld, and Tony D'Anna were all scratches with what management termed, "Linkitis". Captain Bill Auld reported that all three players were given a fit bill of health and would've played had it not been for a late flight back from the Orlando Linkitis health and wellness center.
- Overheard during the game was the referee predicting a Bomber short handed goal to win the game in the 3rd period.
- Same referee awarded checking penalty to Brian Kostrowski for leveling Spartan player, who skated into Kostrowski, drawing the penalty, despite a shocked BK.

Hoyer' Scores 4 in Bomber Rout

"Jean" Eric Hoyer' scored 4 goals and assisted on another as the Bomber Hockey Club took an outmatched Red Dog team to the woodshed. Hoyer', who had a hatrick in his first game with the orginization back on February 21, 2010 had not had hatrick until his 4 goal outburst. Not particularly amazing until you consider the steady scorer had 9 games in that span where he scored 2 goals in a game.

"Impressive, he really is a great player and that's why we went out and got him." said Bomber captain Bill Auld. "His scoring touch is only surpassed by what he brings to this team in the locker room. He is the perfect teammate."

Dave Bochner and Mike Rosenberg also added 2 goals apiece to back up an impressive night in goal by Josh Burke.

Next up- those pesky Spartans.
