Lawson Inks Long Term Deal to Stay with Bombers

Bomber GM Bill Auld announced Tuesday that foward Jimmy Lawson signed a long term deal to stay with the Bomber Hockey Organization, confirming what many Bomber fans had heard was in the works.

Lawson said, "This is a special day for me. My mind was made up that this is where I wanted to play. I mean look at the history of the players who have put on the Bomber sweater. This is probably the biggest moment in my hockey career so far. I just want to help contribute to the great tradition of the red, gold and blue."

Bombers Slip Up-Lose to Last Place Metro Fire

Secure in their playoff position, the Bombers appeared to look past the last place Metro Fire on Sunday in a lackluster game. With nothing to lose the Metro Fire came out gunning for the Bombers in a effort to salvage what has been another dismal season.

Metro used an aggressive forecheck and a chippy demeanor to skate past the Bombers who will play the Bears in next week's first round playoff matchup. Two even strength Metro goals in the 2nd proved to be enough as they won 3-1 for only the second win of their season.

Bobby Calvano, fresh of a stint on the DL with a "groin injury", scored the Bombers only goal.

Lawson Scores 5 in Bombers Tie with First Place Mounties

Jimmy Lawson had his best night as a Bomber, himself equalling the Mountaineers goal total of 5, but the Bombers couldn't get the win or help from the officials and settled for a 5-5 tie last night at Twin Oaks Ice Rink.

After the game Lawson commented "I was really in groove-I was hitting my spots. Some nights you just feel it. I guess this was one of those nights." Seeing #18 was in a zone the Bombers capitalized by setting him up as much as possible to great results. Lawson might have had 6 goals if not for a questionable call from the men in stripes. Many Bomber players felt the Mountaineers goalie was intentionally knocking the net off its moorings which eventually proved costly as a goal was waived off in the second period.

The Bombers proved resourceful with many playing out of position due to the fact they were without their top 5 defensemen. And midway through the third, against a Mountaineer squad that had not lost all season, the Bombers found themselves up 5-2

But the Moutaineers quickly struck back and scored 33 seconds after Lawson's fifth goal to make it 5-3. They again scored late in the period to close within one. Then, with the Mounties amping up their attack, Mike Rosenberg was forced to take a tripping penalty with 1:31 and the Mounties pulled their goalie. With the ensuing 6 on 4 manpower advantage the Mountaineers staved off defeat by scoring with 11 seconds remaining.

"It was a bittersweet-I mean we played the top team well. But it's hard not to walk away with the win considering how well we played." said Bomber Rober' Auld.

Next up for the Bombers- the last place Metro Fire on Sunday.

Bombers Skate Past Shamrocks With Strong Team Effort

Behind solid goaltending, stout defense and creative scoring the Bombers beat the Shamrocks 6-3 on Sunday night. After going down 1-0 early in the 2nd period the Bombers fought back and scored 4 unanswered goals. When Gary Simpson added 2 goals in 39 seconds early in the 3rd period the game was out of reach for the Shamrocks.
The Bombers also got 2 goals from Jimmy Lawson and one each from John Zimnoch and Bill Auld.

With 2 defensemen out with "flu like symptoms", Mr. Versatilty, Neil Van der horn, stepped in and led the blueliners with an aggressive performance. Van der horn intimidated oncoming fowards with his "wrecking ball" style- thwarting two on ones, drawing penalties and mixing it up on more than one occasion.

Josh Burke, playing his second game with a broken middle finger (don't ask) was as good as he has been all season holding off the skilled Shamrock fowards.

The Bombers hope to continue their solid team play on Thursday when they face the first place Mountaineers in what many see as a playoff preview.
