Agents Win First Game of Challenge Cup

The fans attending the first game in the inaugural Bomber Challenge Cup-sponsored by Praxinet, marveled at what a great contest they had just seen. A high scoring affair between two uptempo clubs that, when all was said and done, was won by the Agents over Team Valley Sports.

The scoring started early with a Team Valley Sports goal just 3 mins and 19 secs into the a game that saw two evenly matched teams trading goals all night. Eric "Silk Hands" Hoyer netted that first tally and when asked how it felt to score the first goal of this historic tournament he simply stated, "I was in the right place at the right time." That's what the fans in the nearly full to capacity Twin Oaks Ice Rink felt themselves as they watched the teams play-they too were in the right place at the right time.

Unfortunately for Team Valley Sports that was the only lead they would see all night. The Agents had one goal leads on three different occasions only to see Team Valley Sports tie it up.

When the Agents took a penalty with 2:11 left in the game many felt Valley could push the game to overtime. But it was not to be, the Agents promptly scored shorthanded 9 seconds later and wound up winning by a 6-4 score.

Agents captain Marc Mezzacca would say when asked after the game about the honor of winning the tournament's first ever contest, "It was a good game."

That it was.

Next game in the tournament is Friday Jan 2nd @ 9:30- a game between The Bombers and Team Valley Sports.

Bears Take Bite out of Bombers Playoff Run

The Bomber Hockey Club was anxious to get back into the playoff picture and seemed poised to advance to the B2 championship after beating the Bears 7-3 in the last regular season game.

But the Bombers should have saved some of those goals for the playoffs, losing to the Bears 3-2 in a close playoff battle. The Bombers were able to tie the game twice with goals from Bobby Calvano, back after missing 5 straight games, and Mike Rosenberg.

But with 3 minutes remaing the Bombers got caught on the wrong side of a 2 on 1 break and fell behind for the third time in the contest. The Bomber faithful had some hope when the Bears took two consecutive penalties and faced a 5 on 3 shorthanded situation. But even with goalie Josh Burke pulled for a 6 on 3 advantage the Bombers were never able to control the puck. The Bears skilled #30 worked the top of the shorthanded triangle and fended off the Bombers advance on numerous occasions.

"It was a good season considering we were without Calvano and D'anna for most of the season and only had Mosser (Rich Moss) for the second half. And tonight being without Van der horn, Lawson and Smith was tough" said Bomber winger Mike Rosenberg after the game.

But the Bombers can build on a season that saw them raise their point total by a factor of 10 from the previous season. "I see 2009 as a big year on the ice for the Bombers" said Bomber GM Bill Auld.

Bombers Dominate Bears-Clinch Playoff Berth

M.Bochner, Jim Lawson and Rich Moss recorded a staggering 13 pts as a foward line on Sunday helping the Bombers clinch a playoff spot in the B2 championship series. Lawson and Bochner each had a hatrick on the night with Moss acting as the assist man with 4 helpers. Lawson added 3 assists of his own for a 6pt night.

The Time Line also recorded big numbers during the contest, racking up 22 minutes in penalties. Most of the confrontation revolved around some philosphical differences between The Rev. Mike Rosenberg and one Utah raised official that caused #3 to leave the precedings a tad early. Rosenberg took one for the team, or at least for #10-Superstar Johnny Z who escaped his second "yelling at the opponent" penalty of the night when Rosenberg successfully diverted the offical's attention.

But all's well that ends well (and a few seconds early). The Bombers should shape up to be the 7 seed- in all likelyhood facing these same Bears in the first round of playoff competition.

Game notes:

Adam Lapinski has a 2 game streak of shooting pucks at people not on the ice. Lapinski's target this week was an unaware scorekeeper who was briefly attended to by medical personnel but was fortunately able to finish his duties.

After the team defense let up 11 goals in the team's contest vs "the New" Dallas Wrecking" 2 games ago, Josh Burke has helped the team rebound with a solid stablizing performance of late.

Jim Lawson's 24pts are the most for a Bomber player since Mark Bochner's 26 pts in the spring of 2006.
